Pictured above is Carlsbad State Beach Campground and everything about it is perfect. We back our trailer as close to the fence as we can and get to spend five days gazing at the ocean, the pelicans flying, the dolphins gracefully passing, and an occasional whale or two in the distance.
Not to mention the waves crashing day and night which is the best way to fall asleep and wake up. It really is the perfect southern California get-away. We had awesome weather and even had a couple of mornings with blue skies to wake up to.
Mike and I have done this trip a few times and each time we seem to find new adventures. This trip included a stop at the Carlsbad Flower Fields. It is 50 acres along the freeway with a spectacular display of Ranunculus flowers in every possible vibrant color.
Always nice to enjoy a bit of agricultural tourism when we can. It certainly reminded me of the tulips fields up in Washington state with a similarly short season to enjoy–March through May is all you get.
We always try to head down the coast a bit and visit the Torrey Pines Gliderport. We were lucky to be there on a windy day and there must have been twenty paragliders showing off their colorful parachutes.
They even take out riders but neither Mike or I have been brave enough to try it yet. Maybe someday.
This trip included a first time visit to Imperial Beach which is located south of San Diego between the city and the Mexican border. It is a lovely beach and had a funky beach-town vibe. We also found Sunset Cliffs and decided it will probably be a place to come back too for that perfect “sunset” shot.
There was a yoga on the cliffs class starting while we were there. What a place!!
Next stop was dinner with cousin Andrew with amazing views of the San Diego city skyline in front of San Diego Bay. Always fun to catch up with Andrew and the food and view could not be beat.
Before you know it, it was time to head north. We traveled up Hwy. 101 to our old standby–Morro Strand State Beach in Morro Bay. We always have fun in Morro Bay and this trip was not an exception. We traveled over to San Luis Obispo on Saturday for a Cal Poly Baseball game. Mike was celebrating his birthday and was super surprised to find both Matthew and Hannah in the stands to help him celebrate. Cal Poly won and then we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Ventana Grill in Pismo Beach.
It was the first time in quite a while that all four of us were together to celebrate Mike.
Over the next couple of days we made sure to hit up all our favorite spots including watching the surfers do their thing and the otters hanging out in the kelp forest.
What an enjoyable first trip of the year. Back at it again starting June 13th as we head north for the summer. Washington state here we come.
