What You Do When You Can’t Travel

It’s January and we have no travel plans in place. Covid is everywhere with no end in sight. While scrolling through Pinterest, I get an idea. Why don’t we update our 5th wheel a bit? You know, just a couple easy changes. We already need a new bathroom sink and we could maybe take down the ugly valances on every window. But the more I dug into various posts, the more I realized there was so much we could do. I am definitely using “we” loosely here since I have no renovating skills. I am more of a design person!! This task, if taken on, would be all Mike. Of course he wasn’t too interested at first. He gently explained how much nicer our 5th wheel was than a tent and how happy he is to sit in his comfy leather chair every evening and sleep in our queen size bed with our own bathroom. But I prevailed after much conversation-I think he even liked the challenge of it. He would be doing many renovations he had never done before-you gotta love the internet.

We started by taking everything out and it is amazing how much STUFF fits in a 5th Wheel. We even took out all the flooring which is as hard as you might imagine. So many tiny nails. Mike had to research how to put the flooring down (which he had never done) and fit it into the slides of the RV. Okay, not too hard you say-well, what about the edges?? Yes, there were a lot of how-to videos to watch.

But before we could put down the flooring, we had to paint. Yikes!! Every wall, every cabinet-it was endless. The cabinets all had to be sanded first followed by primer and then 3 coats of paint. Every surface in the trailer, except the ceiling, got new paint. The painting alone took over two months. What a difference the lighter paint color made. But Mike was only getting started. He also painted the dining room table and chairs, and the headboard to our bed. We recovered the cushions on the chairs, put in a new dining light, and added wallpaper to the faces of the stairs and as backspash in the kitchen.

Of course, I got to do some shopping. We bought new blinds for every window, a new couch (goodbye ugly RV couch), and some rugs and other accessories. We even used some of Mike’s photography as artwork for the walls. Oh ya, I got a new bathroom sink too!!

It looks amazing. I can’t believe the transformation and I can’t wait to get it out on the road again!
